Quick answers about staying safe, buying, selling, and reaching us.
Staying safe
How does Selby keep my money safe?
Your card is held, not charged, until the seller buys the shipping label, or enters your code at a pickup. The seller is paid only once you have the item.
How do I meet safely?
Meet somewhere public, in daylight, and always pay with Selby so you’re covered.
Will Selby ask for my sign-in code?
Never. Selby will never ask you for your sign-in code: not by phone, text or chat.
What does Selby hide in messages?
Phone numbers, email addresses, links and payment handles. A message asking for codes, gift cards, crypto, wire transfers or an overpayment waits for a person to read it.
How do I report something?
Report a listing or a person from their page, and a review where you read it. You can block someone from your conversation with them. Or call Selby’s report line: (559) 370-6872.
What about copyright, or intimate images?
For copyright, see copyright notices. For intimate images shared without consent, see removing intimate images.
Buying
What do I pay?
The price on a listing is all in: it includes Buyer Protection ($0.99 + 2% of the item price). Shipping, when it ships, is added at checkout. See Selby’s fees.
When am I charged?
At checkout, we hold the price on your card, and you have 30 minutes to finish paying. You’re charged when the seller buys the shipping label, or when the seller enters your code at a pickup. If the seller doesn’t buy the label in time (3 business days at most), we release the hold.
Can I pay with Klarna?
For shipped items of $100.00 or more, when the seller offers it. Selby’s price is the same; Klarna’s plan decides when you pay, and what it costs you.
How do offers work?
Offer from 50% of the price, and we hold your card for it. The seller has 24 hours to accept, decline, or counter once; you have 24 hours to take a counteroffer. You can have 3 offers in play until your first purchase, then 10.
Is an offer binding?
Making an offer needs a verified phone. An offer is binding: if the seller accepts it, it’s a sale at that price, and you’re charged as at checkout. Until the seller answers, you can withdraw it.
What if something’s wrong when it arrives?
You have 72 hours after delivery to check it. Report a problem on the order’s page. See Buyer protection.
Meeting up
How does a pickup work?
Check the item, then show the seller your code. When they enter it, your card is charged and the sale is done.
What if we need more time?
We hold your card until the meetup deadline. You can renew the hold once, from 48 hours before it ends.
What if someone doesn’t show up?
The other can say so on the order’s page, and the one who didn’t show gets a strike.
What if it’s counterfeit?
Report it on the order’s page within 72 hours of the handoff.
Selling
What do I need to sell?
A verified phone number, and payouts set up with Stripe. Then your listings can go live.
How are listings checked?
Every listing is checked before it goes live, usually in seconds. Some are checked by a person, which takes longer. See what can’t be sold.
What does selling cost?
Selby keeps 3% of the item price when it sells (6.5% when the buyer pays with Klarna, which you choose to offer). No listing, payout or promotion fees.
How much can I sell?
You’re new until you have 3 completed sales and 30 days on Selby. Verifying your ID takes you to the highest limits.
| Tier | Listings up at once | Highest price | Published a day |
|---|---|---|---|
| New | 15 | $500.00 | 10 |
| Established | 200 | $2,500.00 | 30 |
| ID-verified | 1,000 | $10,000.00 | 100 |
When do I need to verify my ID?
For watches, jewelry and handbags at $250.00 or more, and when Selby’s safety checks call for it. Stripe takes a photo of your ID and a selfie, with your consent. Selby keeps only the result.
How do I ship it, or hand it over?
For a shipped order, buy Selby’s prepaid label from the order’s page within 3 business days, and ship it. If the carrier hasn’t scanned it within 5 business days of the label, the buyer gets their money back. At a pickup, let the buyer check the item, then enter the code they show you.
What gives me a strike?
Missing the label deadline, a package the carrier never scans, canceling a pickup, or not showing up to one gives you a strike. Strikes can lead to limits on your account, or to losing it.
When do I get paid?
Once a shipped order’s 72-hour inspection ends, or at a pickup’s handoff. Your first 5 sales wait 3 days longer. Payouts go to your bank every Monday, or withdraw once every 24 hours: $1.00 at least. After you change your two-step verification, payouts wait 72 hours. See seller protection.
What if I sell a lot?
Under the INFORM Consumers Act, once you’ve made 200 or more sales of new items, totaling $5,000.00 or more, in a year, Selby asks for your details and verifies them. You have 10 days. First, verify your phone and your ID, and set up payouts. At $20,000.00 in sales, your name and how to reach you show on your listings. Disclosure shows your name (or your business’s), your address (only its state, if it’s your home), your email, and your phone (unless it’s personal). If the days run out, your selling pauses until you give your details; you can still buy.
Messages, notes and stories
What’s a note?
A note is one line saying what you’re looking for, which members near you see in Messages for 24 hours and can answer with a listing.
What’s a story?
A story is a seller’s photo of something for sale, on the home page and their shop for 24 hours, and replying to one sends them a message about it.
Your account
How do I sign in?
You sign in with a code Selby emails you. Where the sign-in page offers Apple, Google or Facebook, you can use that account instead. In Security, you can add a passkey (your face, fingerprint or screen lock), turn on two-step verification (a code from an authenticator app), and sign out everywhere.
How do reviews work?
After an order, each side has 14 days to review the other. A review stays hidden until both have written one, or the 14 days end.
Can I get my data, or delete my account?
Download what Selby keeps about you from your account, or delete your account. Selby keeps your orders and payments, and what other members have, after you go. Deleting it also deletes what Apple, Google or Facebook shared when you signed in with them. You can also remove Selby in Facebook’s settings, under Apps and websites.
Who can use Selby?
People 18 or older, in the United States.
